Second-quarter earnings reports help stocks to gain

U.S. market indexes gained on Tuesday with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq reaching new highs. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21613.43 for a gain of 100.26 points or 0.47%. The S&P 500 closed at 2477.08 for a gain of 7.17 points or 0.29%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6412.17 for a gain of 1.37 points or 0.02%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 9.49 with a gain of 0.06 points or 0.64%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Stocks gained from better-than-expected earnings results. Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Federal Reserve began its two-day July policy meeting this week.
  • The FHFA House Price Index increased 0.4% for the month.
  • The S&P Corelogic Case-Shiller Home Price Index increased 0.1% for the month.
  • The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index increased to 121.1 from 117.3.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Caterpillar (CAT, Financial) 5.88%

McDonald's (MCD, Financial) 4.75%

Wal-Mart (WMT, Financial) 2.12%

JPMorgan (JPM, Financial) 1.67%

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1450.39 for a gain of 12.33 points or 0.86%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 876.06 for a gain of 7.73 points or 0.89%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8789.73 for a gain of 56.51 points or 0.65%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9793.58 for a gain of 105.43 points or 1.09%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1791.93 for a gain of 15.13 points or 0.85%; the S&P 100 Index at 1090.07 for a gain of 3.25 points or 0.30%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1469.21 for a gain of 5.22 points or 0.36%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1373.55 for a gain of 4.32 points or 0.32%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 667.40 for a gain of 3.66 points or 0.55%.
