Friday Sector Laggards: Utilities, Energy

The worst performing sector as of midday Friday is the Utilities sector, showing a 0.3% loss. Within that group, AES Corp. (NYSE: AES) and Exelon Corp (NYSE: EXC) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 1.7% and 1.0%, respectively. Among utilities ETFs, one ETF following the sector is the Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (AMEX: XLU), which is down 0.3% on the day, and up 15.07% year-to-date. AES Corp., meanwhile, is down 1.38% year-to-date, and Exelon Corp is up 13.75% year-to-date. Combined, AES and EXC make up approximately 6.5% of the underlying holdings of XLU.

The next worst performing sector is the Energy sector, up 0.1%. Among large Energy stocks, Schlumberger Ltd (NYSE: SLB) and Baker Hughes, A GE Company (NYSE: BHGE) are the most notable, showing a loss of 3.3% and 1.1%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Energy stocks is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE), which is flat on the day in midday trading, and down 7.90% on a year-to-date basis. Schlumberger Ltd, meanwhile, is down 23.93% year-to-date, and Baker Hughes, A GE Company, is down 48.76% year-to-date. Combined, SLB and BHGE make up approximately 7.9% of the underlying holdings of XLE.
