US Market Indexes Gain on Monday

U.S. market indexes were higher on Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 23,430.33 for a gain of 72.09 points or 0.31%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,582.14 for a gain of 3.29 points or 0.13%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,790.71 for a gain of 7.92 points or 0.12%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 10.65 for a loss of -0.78 points or -6.82%.

Monday’s market movers

Janet Yellen announced she would be resigning from the Federal Reserve. Investors continued to consider tax reform and had a more positive outlook on corporate earnings.

The Leading Economic Indicators Index was the only major economic report on the calendar for Monday. The Index increased 1.2% for the month.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Verizon (VZ, Financial) 1.78%

Cisco (CSCO, Financial) 1.67%

Home Depot (HD, Financial) 1.60%

IBM (IBM, Financial) 0.99%

JPMorgan (JPM, Financial) 0.92%

In the broad market, financial and industrial stocks led gains. Technology was also higher with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.38%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,503.40 for a gain of 10.57 points or 0.71%. The S&P 600 closed at 915.80 for a gain of 6.89 points or 0.76%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,153.49 for a gain of 56.29 points or 0.62%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,031.53 for a gain of 50.42 points or 0.51%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,847.21 for a gain of 6.47 points or 0.35%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,136.20 for a gain of 0.85 points or 0.07%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,531.19 for a gain of 2.86 points or 0.19%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,432.11 for a gain of 2.06 points or 0.14%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 681.21 for a gain of 0.61 points or 0.09%.
