- Amazon.com (AMZN -1.8%) will take over exclusive video rights to the NFL's Thursday Night Football in 2022, a year earlier than expected.
- Moving Thursday Night Football exclusively to streaming (except in the playing teams' cities) was part of the NFL's landmark media rights deals reached in March. But the deal originally called for Amazon to start streaming in the 2023-2024 season.
- But with current rights holder Fox (FOX -0.4%, FOXA -0.6%) agreeing to exit early, Amazon can take over in the 2022-2023 season.
- With average annual rights running about $1.2B, that's the price tag for Amazon to get an extra season, the WSJ says.
- “This expedited deal is an immediate differentiator for us as a service, as it gives Prime members exclusive access to the most popular sport in the United States,” says Amazon's Marie Donoghue.
- Fox has indicated its willingness to step away from Thursday night for months; in the lengthy negotiations and with fees skyrocketing, the company said in December that Sunday games were the real core to its concerns.
