Electricite de France (OTCPK:ECIFF) says it is in contact with China General Nuclear Power Corp. seeking "resolution of a performance issue" at a nuclear plant owned by their joint venture in China's Guangdong province.
EDF and its Framatone subsidiary issued statements after CNN reported that the U.S. government has been assessing a report of a possible leak at the Chinese plant after the French company warned of an "imminent radiological threat."
The warning included claims that the Chinese safety authority raised the acceptable limits for radiation detection outside the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant in order to avoid shutting it down, according to the report.
While CNN says the Biden administration believes the facility is not yet at a crisis level, "it is unusual that a foreign company would unilaterally reach out to the American government for help when its Chinese state-owned partner is yet to acknowledge a problem exists."
EDF owns a 30% share in the Taishan Nuclear Power JV.
