- For Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), the market for tablet shipments in Western Europe appears to be one for the taking according to a new sector research report.
- According to Canalys, Apple's (AAPL) iPad shipments in Western Europe during the third-quarter climbed to almost 3 million units, while other major vendors experienced drastic declines across the continent. Canalys said Apple (AAPL) saw a 33% rise in iPad shipments over the same period a year ago, even as the overall tablet market in Western Europe shrunk by 20%, to 6.9 million units.
- Canalys Analyst Trang Pham attributed the growth to the tech giant's "dedicated focus on the tablet market," adding that Apple (AAPL) launches new iPads throughout the year to cater to more customers.
- Pham also noted Apple's (AAPL) "vertically integrated supply chain has insulated it well from bearing the brunt of the corrective decline,” notably the supply chain issues that have plagued other consumer electronics companies around the world.
- The other top four vendors - Samsung (OTC:SSNLF), Lenovo, Huawei and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) - all saw declines of between 20% and 53% in their tablet shipments. Samsung (OTC:SSNLF) shipped approximately 1 million tablets in the third quarter, down from more than 2 million a year ago, while Amazon (AMZN) shipped approximately 500,000 tablets, down from roughly 1 million.
- Apple (AAPL), the world's most valuable company with a $2.63 trillion market, also continued to make waves in the Western European PC market, as Mac shipments rose 27% year-over-year to an estimated 1.93 million in the third quarter, up from 1.52 million during the same time frame in 2020. It also increased its market share to 12%, up from 11%.
- Earlier this month, a report from Asia said that a shortage in components was causing Apple (AAPL) to cut iPad production and use chips and other parts from the tablets in order to fill iPhone 13 orders.
